Some Fun Sewing After the "New" Coat!
Or, If Someone Gives You Fabric, Use It!
So, I'm starting to run again to get into 10K shape by spring and in order to do that here in New England it is best to join a gym and get on the treadmill. The weather is just too cold some mornings to be out running, never mind the ice and snow. Planet Fitness had a good deal right at the end of the year, a pre-paid, $99 one year membership, which also happened to have a free t-shirt thrown in with the deal. See yesterday's Parting Shot for the original t-shirt.
I got my t-shirt, quickly looked at the tag and asked if they had a small. No smalls, only XL. Ok. So if you're not an XL, what do you do with the t-shirt? Well, if you can sew, it is not a total loss. Look at it this way, that's a good yard or more of fabric. That plus a pattern already in the collection (Out of Print New Look 6265) and some black knit already in the collection (I do keep solid knit pieces for stuff like this) will equal a much more wearable shirt for the gym.
After cutting the t-shirt apart at the side seams, I was able to cut out the front and back, easily. There is still white leftover, which I'll save for another project some time.
I was able to use the coverstitch machine to finish the neckline and armholes. I ran white in one needle and black in the other to match the fabrics:
Now it's not too bad, is it? For the intended purpose of wearing to the gym, getting sweaty and yucky and being washed to death, it will do nicely. The gym isn't a fashion runway for me, but at the same time, gym-only clothes aren't a bad thing, either.
The lessons here: don't immediately dismiss something as unusable, be creative, and keep those fabric scraps (VickiW would approve, too, check out what she does with scraps!).
Tomorrow: Starting the fur jacket! Finally! The pattern is traced and as soon as I finish altering the last pair of trousers for a client, I'll get to the cutting and vacuuming of fuzz.
Parting Shot: New Sled. This is one of my son's Christmas gifts - a new sled. He picked it out and bought it with a gift certificate to Amazon (it's a Zipfy sled). He tried it out this afternoon and said it goes really fast. Now, if we had some more snow, then he'd really have fun!

You know, I do wear an XL because of bust size but the darn shirts are always HANGING on me everywhere else! What a fantastic idea to make it fit a bit better-big huge shirts make big breasted girls look...big and huge. A bit of shaping could take those basic tee shirts in a much more stylish and flattering direction! I am SO stealing this idea!
Brilliant! Now I know what to do with all those extra gigantic t-shirts I have left. I will dye them and send you some and keep some to refashion for myself.
Your T-shirt looks great. I like the logo on it!
We have had some snow since Christmas, not much but I'd love to send your son some :))
Great conversion, I think wearing the original to the gym would have been like working out in a dress!
Love the redo! It looks truly terrific. I bet you'll have others asking you to redo their t-shirts!
"So if you're not an XL, what do you do with the t-shirt? "
1: Sleep in it
2: Give it to DH for a "dirty-work" t-shirt
Really, you dd the best possible thing with it. You might find people asking you where you got it.
I love love what you did with the huge tshirt. Very nice. And using two colors of thread is really attention to detail. The contrast bands look so professional.
Thanks for the tee shirt make-over!I will definitely try to adjust some passed down tee shirts from DS.
What a beautiful result. Bet you get asked where you got that well fitting shirt.
You are so tricky! Nice job, and good luck with the training! My kids are waiting for a big snow fall for some sledding, too. I don't know whether to root for them, or keep my fingers crossed to keep it away (I hate winter)!
Hello, sewing can do it, would transform something that qualifies as useless and a usable number, economize money, preserving nature and still have fun making.

You won't believe this, but I deliberly buy T-shirts at least 1 size too large! I use Pamela Patterns T. I confess I wait until they put the T-shirts on sale, but I actually like to buy the finished T's because I have current colors and prints to work with.
Thanks for the link to VickiW. She is amazing.
The top looks great, and I'm taking note of that neckline and armhole finishing!
